HAM RADIO
Amateur Radio, commonly known as HAM Radio, is a licensed communication service that enables individuals to experiment with radio technology and provide emergency communication during disasters. The HAM Radio Club was inaugurated in our university by the Department of Electronics & communication Engineering on the 22nd of September 2024 by our Honorable President Er. A.C.S Arunkumar to foster technical knowledge, innovation, and community service among students.
The HAM Radio Club was established with the following objectives:
- To promote interest in wireless communication and radio technology.
- To provide hands-on training in amateur radio operations.
- To encourage students to obtain amateur radio licenses.
- To support emergency communication during disasters.
- To enhance technical and practical skills in electronics and communication systems.
In our university, the HAM Radio Club plays a crucial role in bridging theoretical knowledge with practical implementation in the field of communication engineering. It encourages students to gain hands-on experience in radio operation, antenna design, and signal transmission while also preparing them for real-world applications. To enhance these skills regular workshops on HAM radio basics, Morse code training sessions, field exercises and communication drills have been conducted under the guidance of the Head of the Department Dr. U.Jayalatsumi and the faculty coordinator Dr.S.Deborah by inviting experts in this field.
On the 23rd and 24th of September 2024 a two day hands on workshop was conducted by the HAM Radio club. Our special guest was Mr.B.A.Subramani, Space Environmental Simulation Engineer (Retd), UR Radio Satellite Centre, Bangalore. He delved with the practical understanding of satellite communication system, Hands-on experience with RF equipements and students were able to do a live tracking of satellite and was able to listen to the signals.

On the 6th of April 2026 another workshop on “Exploring Amateur Radio: A hands on experience”. Mr. P. Thyagarajan, President of Chennai HAM Radio club was the speaker and he gave an overview of HAM Radio and demonstrated HAM Radio communication with VHF setup. Students were able to communicate with other HAM’s and the session was enlightening and interesting.
The HAM Radio Club serves as an essential platform for experiential learning in wireless communication. Its structured functioning, combined with technical activities significantly enhances students knowledge and skills. The club not only supports academic growth but also prepares students to contribute effectively in emergency situations, making it a valuable asset to the university.
