About the Department
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been functioning since 1988, from the very beginning of Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College. Since its establishment, the department has consistently upheld a strong commitment to academic excellence, delivering quality technical education, and nurturing competent mechanical engineers.
Mechanical Engineering is one of the core branches of engineering that drives innovation and industrial development. It plays a vital role in the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of machines, energy systems, automobiles, aerospace components, robotics, and industrial equipment. From power plants to production industries, mechanical engineers are the backbone of modern infrastructure and technological advancement.
The department is strengthened by a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members, many of whom hold Ph.D. degrees and actively contribute to research. The faculty members actively engage in research and constantly publish papers in International and National Journals.
The department has state-of-the art facilities for various laboratories, department library and classrooms to support e-learning. Our department regularly organizes technical workshops for the faculty members to expose them to emerging areas. Guest lectures and industrial visits are periodically arranged for the students to supplement their curriculum .B.Tech – Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by National Board of Accreditation reflecting the department’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards and industry relevance.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is committed to transforming students into competent, industry-ready professionals through structured academic training, practical exposure, and continuous skill development. Our graduates are well placed in manufacturing industries, automotive companies, energy sectors, design firms, and IT-enabled engineering services, with many pursuing higher studies in reputed institutions.
The department has research projects funded by ISRO – VSSC, Coir Board (Central Coir Research Institute), and Anabond Pvt Ltd for conducting research in Design and Analysis of Collapsible Mandrel System for Solid Propellant Casting, Development of coir Processing Machinery and Development of Laser Holographic Interferometry System.
Department of Mechanical Engineering at Dr.M.G.R Research Institute offers courses both at undergraduate and graduate levels. The department also offers Doctoral Programs in the field of Mechanical engineering.

Mission
- M1: To provide quality education through well-structured curricula supplemented with practical training and field visits to leading industries

Engineering Graduates will be able to:
PO1: Engineering Knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, computing, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization as specified in WK1 to WK4 respectively to develop to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PO2: Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions with consideration for sustainable development. (WK1 to WK4)
PO3: Design/Development of Solutions: Design creative solutions for complex engineering problems and design/develop systems/components/processes to meet identified needs with consideration for the public health and safety, whole-life cost, net zero carbon, culture, society and environment as required. (WK5)
PO4: Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Conduct investigations of complex engineering problems using research-based knowledge including design of experiments, modelling, analysis & interpretation of data to provide valid conclusions. (WK8).
PO5: Engineering Tool Usage: Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering & IT tools, including prediction and modelling recognizing their limitations to solve complex engineering problems. (WK2 and WK6)
PO6: The Engineer and The World: Analyze and evaluate societal and environmental aspects while solving complex engineering problems for its impact on sustainability with reference to economy, health, safety, legal framework, culture and environment. (WK1, WK5, and WK7).
PO7: Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics, human values, diversity and inclusion; adhere to national & international laws. (WK9)
PO8: Individual and Collaborative Team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse/multi-disciplinary teams.
PO9: Communication: Communicate effectively and inclusively within the engineering community and society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations considering cultural, language, and learning differences
PO10: Project Management and Finance: Apply knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and economic decision-making and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, and to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
PO11: Life-Long Learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability for i) independent and life-long learning ii) adaptability to new and emerging technologies and iii) critical thinking in the broadest context of technological change. (WK8)
PSO 1: Ability to identify, analyze and solve engineering problems by using fundamentals and advanced concepts in the domains of Design, Thermal and Manufacturing systems.
PSO 2: Ability to apply their multidisciplinary knowledge in principle of design and analysis, in execution of automation in mechanical system / processes.
PSO 3: Attain excellence in using managerial tools and techniques for effective and efficient manufacturing and in developing leadership skills with ethical practices

Our department is committed to providing high-quality technical education through a well-structured, industry-aligned curriculum, fostering research excellence, and preparing students to contribute significantly in sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, defense aerospace, energy, robotics, and sustainable technologies.
We are proud of our well-established infrastructure, including advanced laboratories in Manufacturing, Thermal Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, CAD/CAM, Additive manufacturing, Robotics, Automation, and Material Testing. These facilities provide hands-on training and experiential learning that bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and industrial practice.
Our team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members actively engage in teaching, research, consultancy, and professional development. Research & Development
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is carrying out research work at Master’s and Doctorate level. Many students, at UG, PG and PhD level, use these facilities to do their final year and pre-final year project work.
The following facilities are available at various labs of our department for doing Research & projects. A nominal price has been fixed for the utilization of these facilities for carrying out research projects.
- Twelve numbers of computer with internet facility.
- LCD projector with display screen for presentation and discussion.
- Five numbers of mould plate for composite manufacturing.
- Setup for making natural/synthetic fiber composites through Hand Laying technique.
- Engine Management System facility with AVL Exhaust Gas Analyzer and AVL Smoke Meter.
- Vibration and Noise Analyzer with LABVIEW software.
- FFT Analyzer
- Bio Diesel plant system
