About the Department
The Department of Civil Engineering at Dr.MGR Educational and Research Institute is certified by ISO and accredited by NBA for 6 years and NAAC with A+ Grade.
The department emerged in 2002 with the vision to train students and impart quality education with its multifaceted faculty. We are offering Full time and Part time Engineering and Technology courses like B.Tech Civil Engineering, M.Tech Structural Engineering, M.Tech Construction Engineering and Management, M.Tech Environmental Engineering, M.Tech Transportation Engineering. We also offer Full time H&S courses like B.Sc Geology, B.Sc Industrial Safety and M.Sc Real Estate Valuation. The Department has grown over the years and recognized as one of the major engineering departments in the country. The Department has developed strong links with various industries, academics and research, both within and outside the country. The Eco-friendly campus, hostels and facilities of the University are maintained by the department along with excellence in teaching- learning, research and innovative extension activities. The students and Research Scholars along with their mentoring faculty in the department actively work in diverse emerging areas of various specializations in Civil Engineering and are equipped with the state-of-the-art technology labs.
The department has always been proactive in organizing a variety of events that includes national workshops, FDPs, Conferences and seminars. The department is sanctioned with sponsored fund from government bodies towards the various research activities by ISRO, AICTE, MODROB and so like along with consultancy work. Lot of funded Projects in the area of Remote sensing is in progress under the Centre of Excellence named “CAREER”. The department faculty hones their knowledge and technical expertise through successful participation in NPTEL courses.
Our alumni are well placed in National and international companies like ALSTOM, Cushman & Weikfield, Sobha Hartland, Dubai, BARC, CSIR, SERC, Chennai Metro, Delhi Metro, SAIL, L&T, Ultratech, Jindal Steels, etc.
We have collaborated with L&T Edutech and CASAGRANDE for progressing in our academic growth for the benefit of our students. Through the spur motivation and competence of our faculty, students have participated and played a part in copious international competitions, forums, stages.
The department boasts of a good number of publications in international journals and conferences with appreciable H-index. The faculty members have authored books in various disciplines and also filed many patents.

The Civil Engineering Department is committed to implement a comprehensive quality assurance framework that continuously monitors, evaluates, and improves the education delivered to our students. The general Program outcomes of Civil Engineering are as follows:
- Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
- Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
- Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
- Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
- Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
- The Engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
- Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
- Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
- Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
- Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.

As Head of the Department, I feel honored to welcome you for the Department of Civil Engineering at Dr.M.G.R Educational Research Institute, Chennai.
Our department fosters an engaging and inspiring academic atmosphere to develop tomorrow’s infrastructure pioneers. The curriculum builds a solid base in core Civil Engineering concepts, paired with real-world practical training to address complex challenges. Our demanding AICTE-approved offerings such as B.Tech Civil Engineering, M.Tech programs in Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Environmental Engineering and Transportation Engineering along with Research(MS/PhD) – deliver in-depth knowledge in sustainable structures, geotechnics, transport networks, and remote sensing technologies.
Our team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members actively engage in teaching, research, consultancy, and professional development. Outside lectures, we promote practical involvement via 10 cutting-edge laboratories (Structural, Fluid Mechanics, Geotechnical, Surveying, Concrete, Transportation, Environmental, etc.), research initiatives, placements, industry partnerships, certification courses, and GATE preparation. These experiences help students tackle actual projects in the industry.
Innovation thrives at our core. Our doctoral faculty and students lead with high-impact WOS and Scopus papers, patents, collaborative publications, and grants from Indian Space Research Organisation – ISRO, Department of Science & Technology – DST, Science and Engineering Research Board – SERB, and BRICS. We operate three Centres of Excellence: Construction Practices Centre, Advanced Structural Engineering Institute – ADSERIN and CAREER.
We actively undertake extensive consultancy projects across Chennai and surrounding regions, delivering expert services to local corporations, District authorities, Government bodies, and private Enterprises. These initiatives span structural assessments, geotechnical investigations, roads work, layout approvals, leveraging our faculty’s specialized knowledge to solve real-world Civil Engineering challenges while generating valuable revenue and hands-on training opportunities for students.
Collaboration defines us. We cultivate an open, unified setting with hands-on groups (Concrete Club, Environmental Club, conferences, seminars, and alliances with IIT PALS, BIS, IGBC, L&T Edutech, and Casagrande. Our graduates shine at L&T, Chennai / Delhi Metro, BARC, ALSTOM, and Sobha Hartland Dubai and many more top places.
