Warm Greetings!!!
The Department of Biotechnology, established in 2003 at Dr. M. G. R. Educational and Research Institute, was founded with the objective of developing skilled professionals in biotechnology by integrating interdisciplinary knowledge from chemical engineering, computer science, and management. Biotechnology, as a field, focuses on applying biological systems for industrial and societal benefits, including the development of vaccines, biomaterials, eco-friendly waste management processes using microbes and enzymes, advanced therapeutics for emerging and re-emerging diseases, innovative diagnostic techniques, and the improvement of crop productivity. The department’s research initiatives are centered on addressing real-world challenges such as reducing environmental pollution through microbial approaches, exploring plant-based compounds for diabetes management and wound healing, studying the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cancer development, and understanding antibiotic resistance mechanisms in bacteria. Supported by research funding from prestigious agencies such as SERB, DST, DBT, and CSIR, the department actively promotes a strong research culture among students and faculty, encouraging participation in funded projects, publications in national and international journals, and presentations at conferences. The department offers B.Sc , M.Sc and PhD Biotechnology programmes along with opportunities for advanced research, preparing students for academic excellence, innovation, and successful careers in the rapidly evolving field of Biotechnology.
