The Department of Earth & Atmospheric Science at Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute was established under Department of Civil Engineering in the year 2018 & certified by ISO and accredited by NAAC with A+ Grade.
Courses offered are Full time B.Sc. (Geology), B.Sc. (Industrial Safety), B.Sc. (Environmental Science & Water Resources), B.Sc Environmental Science and M.Sc. Real Estate Valuation.
B.Sc. (Geology) is an undergraduate earth science degree that trains students to become Geologists. Scope includes study of rocks, minerals, fossils, groundwater and natural events like earthquakes, along with advanced techniques like Remote sensing and GIS. Students undergo blended learning consisting of theory and fieldwork. Employment opportunities exist in both Central and State Government departments of mining, oil exploration, Geological Survey of India TAMIN, PWD etc. Employment opportunities in private sector includes consulting, as well as cement, mining and exploration companies.
B.Sc. (Industrial Safety) focuses on maintaining safety in workplaces such as factories, construction sites, and industries. It covers risk management, fire safety, and occupational health. Graduates usually work as safety officers or HSE professionals, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
is a specialized course that deals with environmental protection along with water management. It includes subjects like hydrology, water conservation, and pollution control, preparing students for roles in water resource management, NGOs, and environmental agencies.
B.Sc Environmental Science is a broader course that studies ecosystems, pollution, climate change, and sustainability. It prepares students for careers in environmental consulting, research, and policy-making, often requiring higher studies for better opportunities.
M.Sc. Real Estate Valuation is a postgraduate program that focuses on property valuation, real estate laws, and market analysis. It prepares students for careers in real estate consulting, banking, and property appraisal, including roles in companies like JLL.

FACILITIES
- Geology Lab: Equipped for mineral and rock identification, it often includes stereo-zoom microscopes, petrological microscopes, and preparation kits for microfossils.
- Environmental Science & Water Resources Lab: These labs focus on physical, chemical, and biological analysis. Standard equipment includes AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer), UV-Visible Spectrophotometers, BOD incubators, and water/soil monitoring devices.
- Industrial Safety Infrastructure: Facilities often feature safety simulation zones, firefighting equipment, and labs for disaster management training and hazard risk assessment.
- GIS & Remote Sensing Lab: A critical shared resource for Geology and Environmental Science, providing software and hardware for satellite data analysis and groundwater monitoring.
