Awareness Session on the Right to Information Act and Its Relevance to Modern Data Science
The Data Science Department, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme, organized an offline awareness session on the Right to Information (RTI) Act to sensitize students to the legal and ethical dimensions of data use in governance. The resource person, Ms. G. Saraswathy, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, provided a comprehensive overview of the evolution, structure, and key provisions of the RTI Act, highlighting its role in promoting transparency and accountability in public institutions. The talk connected RTI-enabled information access with data-driven decision-making, illustrating how public data obtained through RTI requests can support evidence-based policy analysis, open data initiatives, and responsible analytics in the public sector. Students were introduced to practical scenarios where RTI-based datasets intersect with data science tasks such as data cleaning, analysis, and visualization, while also addressing concerns related to privacy and ethical handling of sensitive information. The interactive discussion and question-and-answer segment enabled participants to clarify legal nuances, understand procedural aspects of filing RTI applications, and appreciate the significance of regulatory frameworks in shaping responsible data science practice.
